If you’ve had a caesarean section (c-section) and you’re in your fourth trimester, you might have heard of c-section scar massage. Here is your c-section scar massage guide!
So… when should you start c-section scar massage?
Generally this is at or after 6 weeks postpartum, in line with the tissue healing process. Keeping in mind, it’s also dependent on how your specific scar is healing, so it’s important to have it checked and cleared by your medical team (OB, GP etc) to do so.
How to do scar massage:
Use moisturiser or oil to help reduce friction - it makes it a lot more comfortable!
The massage can be done by you, or if you prefer, it can be done by your partner (or someone else!)
Start gently, particularly if you are a bit sensitive.
Do side to side, up and down, zig zag and circular motions over your scar for around 5 mins in total.
If you aren’t comfortable touching your scar, or if you are feeling quite sensitive or numb, that’s okay. Instead, you can try massaging around your scar as your scar tissue may go further underneath the skin than just the incision site:
Use moisturiser or oil to reduce friction on your skin.
You may note tightness or differences in your abdominal wall that you didn’t see before - these are areas to work on.
Do side to side, up and down, zig zag and circular motions over the area above and below your scar
If your scar is sensitive, numb or has a strange sensation, you may like to try desensitising it. This might look like passing different textures over your scar to get it used to sensation - a cotton bud, a tissue, etc.
